Following God’s Design Brings Blessing: Embracing Rest and Obedience

Written by Christine Greyling – April 2025

In today’s fast-paced world, one of the biggest challenges many people face — including Christians — is the belief that to achieve success, we must do everything ourselves. This mentality stems from pride, much like the people in Genesis 11 who built the Tower of Babel in an effort to accomplish greatness on their own, defying God. But what if I told you that there is a better way? A way that leads to greater fulfilment and divine blessing?

The Pride of Self-Reliance vs. God’s Plan

Many of us feel the need to rely solely on our own efforts to get things done. The desire to work tirelessly, to push forward, and achieve something alone often leads to burnout and stress. However, this mindset isn’t in alignment with God’s plan for us. God didn’t design us to work in isolation. Instead, He created us to partner with Him in all things, including work, rest, and the pursuit of His kingdom.

When we try to do everything ourselves, chaos often follows. But when we align our efforts with God’s will, we find peace, purpose, and direction.

The Balance of Work and Rest: A Divine Design

This brings us to the topic of work and rest. Could it be that our tendency to overwork stems from a desire to feel accomplished, independent, and self-sufficient? Many of us disregard God’s command to keep the Sabbath holy because we believe we know better or that working nonstop is the key to success.

But what if we’ve misunderstood God’s commands? His guidelines, including the Sabbath, aren’t meant to limit us but to protect and provide for us. After all, the One who created us knows what’s best for our well-being. The Sabbath is a divine prescription, designed for our health, peace, and spiritual growth.

The Blessings of Obedience: Resting in God’s Way

Consider this: by following the concept of the Sabbath and committing to rest as God commanded, you may experience blessings in ways you never imagined. It’s possible that the very act of resting, trusting God, and obeying His command could bring greater results than working non-stop.

Throughout history, countless individuals have experienced this truth firsthand. Though it might have felt uncomfortable to let go of their own plans, they discovered that God’s way led to far greater fulfilment. As God says in Isaiah 55:8-9, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts” (Isaiah 55:8-9, ESV).

Embrace Rest and Trust God

Take time to rest. Trust God’s design for your life, including His call for rest. When you embrace His commandment, you’ll see the fruit of obedience and realize that God’s ways truly are higher than our own.

In time, you’ll discover that the peace and blessings that follow obedience are far more rewarding than any extra day of work. The choice is yours: will you trust God and follow His way, or will you continue to rely on your own strength?
