Exhausted? The Hamster Wheel Stops Here

By Christine Greyling

I want to ask you something, and I want you to sit with it for a moment before you keep reading. When last did you feel genuinely rested? Not just physically, but in your soul. When last did your work feel meaningful and not like you were just keeping up? When last did you end a week feeling like what you did actually mattered?

If you are struggling to answer that, this word from Ecclesiastes 3 is for you.

Verse 12: Rejoice and Do Good. That Is the Starting Point.

Solomon writes in verse 12 that there is nothing better for a person to do than to rejoice and do good in their lifetime. This is not a throwaway line. This is God’s design for your life. To worship Him, to be a blessing to Him, and to be a blessing to the people around you.

That is it. That is the foundation. Before the business plan, before the goals, before the calendar fills up, before any of it, this is what God says your life is supposed to look like. Joy. Goodness. Worship.

Verse 13: The Provision and the Joy Are a Gift

Verse 13 builds on that foundation and says that eating and drinking and finding good in your labour, that this is a gift from God. In plain terms, provision and work are gifts. Having food on the table, having something meaningful to do with your hands and your mind, these are not things you manufacture for yourself. They are things God gives.

But here is what I need you to see: you cannot have verse 13 without verse 12. The gift of provision and the joy in your work are downstream of worship. They are the fruit of a life that puts God first and does the works He has called you to.

Jesus said it plainly: seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Not some of these things. All of them.

You do not add God to the equation after you have figured everything else out. He is the equation.

Verse 14: What God Does, Lasts. What We Do Without Him, Doesn’t.

This is the verse that I think a lot of us need to hear. Verse 14 tells us that everything God does remains. It endures. It has staying power. And Dr Charles Stanley puts it in a way that has never left me: everything that is done or acquired outside of the will of God will eventually turn to ashes.

Think about that for a second. All the effort. All the hours. All the energy poured into building something, growing something, achieving something, but doing it in your own strength, without prayer, without seeking God, without involving Him in the process. It will not yield what you are hoping for. The return will disappoint you. And in the meantime, exhaustion will set in. Burnout will come. Because you were never designed to carry it alone.

The Hamster Wheel Is Real

So many of us are living like a hamster on a wheel right now. A lot of movement. A lot of effort. A lot of busyness. And yet the feeling of going nowhere refuses to leave.

That is not a productivity problem. That is not a time management problem. That is a God-first problem.

We have gotten into the habit of fitting God into our day when we have a spare moment, a quick prayer in the car, a verse we scroll past on Instagram, a Sunday service when life is not too hectic. And then we wonder why the work feels hollow and the exhaustion will not lift.

God was never meant to be squeezed into the margins of your life. He was meant to be the beginning of it. Every single day.

Pray Over Everything

Here is what I want to challenge you with this week. Before the first email. Before the first meeting. Before the first task on the list. Stop. Involve God. Pray over what you are about to do. Ask Him for help, for grace, for strength, for guidance over the specific work in front of you.

Because work that is covered in prayer is work that yields a return far greater than anything you could produce in your own strength. It is protected from futility. It is protected from burnout. It is infused with purpose that does not fade when Friday comes.

There is a saying we come back to often in our community, and it is this: the greatest tragedy of our day is not unanswered prayer. It is unoffered prayer.

We are not burning out because God is not answering. We are burning out because we are not asking.

If You Want Work That Matters, Start Here

If you want to do work that is fulfilling, that lasts, that is not a waste of your time and energy, the answer is not a better strategy or a more efficient schedule. The answer is prayer. Seeking God first. Inviting Him into every part of what you are building and doing and becoming.

Stop fitting Him into the day. Make Him the first of the day.

The hamster wheel does not stop by running faster. It stops when you step off and put God back where He belongs, at the very beginning of everything.

Have a blessed week.
